Karzai’s
hallucinations & shenanigans

Presidential
candidate Abdullah Abdullah has asked the UN to step in, vowing to reject the
result due next month because of ‘blatant’ fraud committed in the vote a week
ago. President Karzai in a statement said: “I not only accept this proposal but
I see it as positive step towards ending these problems”. The UN responded
rapidly, saying it noted comments about a potential UN role but will wait to
see further developments. While Pakistan is sincere that Afghanistan becomes a
peaceful, stable, and economically prosperous state, Hamid Karzai driven by the
lust for power continues to work on power-seeking schemes. According to the
Constitution of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai could not contest presidential
election for third term, yet he has been trying hard to find a way to stay in
power or have at least some relevance. Perhaps, call to the UN by Abdullah
Abdullah to step in and Karzai’s acceptance of the proposal is a ploy stir
crisis so that the latter remains in power. Though it does not make much
difference for Pakistan who is at the helm in Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai has
been badmouthing Pakistan, its military and the ISI more than anybody else.
In first week of June 2014, Afghan
government in a veiled reference to Pakistan accused foreign intelligence
services of being behind an attack targeting presidential front-runner Abdullah
Abdullah that killed 12 people. Abdullah had survived the assassination attempt
when two blasts including a suicide bombing hit his campaign motorcade in Kabul
ahead of run-off election. Afghanistan’s National Security Council (NSC), which
is chaired by President Hamid Karzai, said in a statement that Lashkar-e-Taiba
(LeT), a Pakistan-based militant group having connection with Pakistan’s
intelligence agency, was involved. This accusation came after Afghanistan said
that it was pulling out of security talks in Islamabad in anger at cross-border
attacks blamed on the Pakistani army, which it said were designed to disrupt
the second round of its presidential election. But Afghan government
conveniently forgot that at least four soldiers were killed and four others
injured only a week before that incident when militants from the Afghan side of
the border attacked a military post in Bajaur tribal region.
The Inter-Services Public Relations
(ISPR) had confirmed that the attack took place on Manozangal and Moukha top
checkposts and was repulsed by security forces. Unfortunately, despite
Pakistan’s cooperation in liberating Afghanistan from former Soviet Union,
hosting millions of Afghan refugees for more than three decades, cooperating in
the war on terror, and suffering in treasure and men, President Hamid Karzai
has always been badmouthing Pakistan. He is ungrateful to the US also, which
has spent a trillion dollars in war on terror in Afghanistan, and maneuvered to
keep Karzai in power. On 30th March 2014 Hamid Karzai in a phone call with U.S.
Secretary of State John Kerry accused Pakistan of being behind a series of
attacks and of blocking his government from striking a peace deal with the
Taliban. In fact, Pakistan has facilitated dialogue with the Taliban by
releasing the Taliban leaders, yet President Karzai has been routinely making
such accusations against Islamabad.
Afghanistan and the US seek Pakistan’s
cooperation in bringing peace in the war-ravaged country, and Pakistan has been
doing all it could to facilitate the peace process in Afghanistan. But Afghan
National Directorate of Security (NDS), CIA and RAW had unleashed propaganda
campaign against Pakistan. NDS feeds foreign missions and media in Kabul, and
continues to insinuate that ISI is involved in providing material support to
Afghan Taliban. Indian media also continues with its onslaught on Pakistan. In
March 2014, the NSC had said the attack on the hotel was in fact the work of
foreign intelligence services, and when it says foreign intelligence services
it means the ISI. Last year, addressing ceremony on the occasion of
International Women’s Day, President Hamid Karzai had said the Taliban were
holding talks with America in Europe and Gulf but were conducting blasts in
Kabul and Khost. At the same time, he said Taliban were not his enemy, and the
people of Afghanistan had been tortured on the name of Taliban. One would not
understand about his confused outpourings.
President Karzai appears to be sour
for being kept of the loop so far as talks with Taliban were concerned, whereas
he had expected to be at the peace foray’s centre and lead the negotiations. It
was perhaps because of Karzai’s acerbic remarks that a joint press conference
of President Hamid Karzai and US Secretary of Defence Chuck Hagel was
cancelled. In September 2012 also President Karzai had stated: “The US led war
on terror has not been fought the way it should have been, and has brought only
misfortune and grief to Afghanistan”. But he himself is to blame in equal
measure, as he never raised the right demands with the occupiers at the right
time. Secondly, he enjoyed power, perks and privilege of head of the state for
13 years with the support of the occupiers. Even in previous elections when Hamid
Karzai was declared elected, Abdullah Abdullah had accused the occupiers and
Hamid Karazai for election fraud and had withdrawn from election race.
Hamid Karzai has faced many crises in
Afghanistan and survived through worst predicaments. But as a result of being
in power for 13 years, he is well connected with influential war lords, local
and foreign militants, foreign spy agencies like CIA, RAW and MI6 etc. He was
fully aware about US secret war by CIA and Black Water aimed at conducting
sabotage activities and target killings inside Pakistan. Hamid Karzai had
facilitated such attacks to the detriment of Pakistan. To assassinate his
opponents in Afghanistan is not a big deal for Hamid Karzai. If Abdullah
Abdullah is assassinated prior to the announcement of results of run-off
elections in Afghanistan, the world should not be surprised, as he will simply
blame Pakistan/ISI and walk freely. Apart from Hamid Karzai, US and NATO forces
are responsible for the fugitive Pakistani militants living in the Afghan
state’s protected safe havens in the bordering regions of Afghanistan.
