Since Narendra Modi has taken oath as
Prime Minister of Indian violations at the Line of Control have increased
manifold. Only in the first five days of
this week at least 13 Pakistani civilians have been killed and many injured
when Indian troops resorted to un-provoked firing on the Line of Control. It appears that Indian prime minister has
deliberately created this situation, as
he wants to take advantage of Pakistan’s international crisis and also to
divert attention of military from ongoing operation in NWA. Yet, Indian Prime
Minister Narendra Modi cautioned Pakistan on Thursday that “times had changed
and ceasefire violations would no be tolerated”. Defence Minister Arun Jaitley reportedly said
“If Pakistan persists with this adventurism, our forces will make cost of this adventurism unaffordable for it”.
From cancellation of secretary level
talks to the ceasefire violations.
Pakistan’s response has been found wanting. Addressing UNGA, Pakistan’s permanent representative at the UN Masood Khan said:
“We call upon the Indian government to immediately cease fire and help us
preserve tranquility” which is too soft a statement. However, PM Nawaz Sharif has convened the
meeting of National Security council, which will be attended by top civil and
military leadership. It is hoped that
the council would give Indian a message loud and clear that Pakistan will give
a befitting reply if violations are not stopped. There is perception that Prime Minister Nawaz
Sharif’s speech in the United Nations General Assembly stating that the core issue
of Jammu and Kashmir has to be resolved through negotiations in accordance with
the wishes of its people could not be digested by the Indian government.
On 1st August 2014 the every first day
of assumption of this office. The Indian Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag
referred to alleged beheading of an Indian soldier by Pakistani soldiers along
the Line of Control in Poonch Sector 18
months ago. To a question her remarked
that the said actions would get an “intense and immediate response. A press reporter was prompted to ask question
about Indian’s response to Pakistan over Indian soldier’s beheading and mutilating his body on 8th
January 2013, so that Indian army chief could spew venom against Pakistan. Since he could not find any other reason to
malign Pakistan, he found it convenient to refer to the incident that allegedly
took place 18 months ago. The Indian
Army had claimed in January last year that firing by Pakistani troops near the
LoC had killed two Indian soldiers with one’s head allegedly served and taken
away.
IN August 2014, Indian BSF personnel
had resorted to unprovoked firing in Chaparial and Harpal sectors on the
working boundary near Sialkot, which resulted in the death of two civilians a
woman and a 60 year old man Pakistan also claimed that India had been using
“propaganda” to divert attention from a deadly raid it had conducted on a military post leaving a Pakistani
soldier dead and another injured.
However, the continued violations of
ceasefire on LoC by the Indian Army and offensive overtures made by overzealous
media and government officials are deplorable.
Over more than a decade, Pakistan’s civil and military leaderships have shown re-straint in
the wake of provocative statements by Indian civil and military leaders. India has always baulked at the negotiations to resolve the disputes
between the two countries in including the core issue of Kashmir.
Indian political and military
leadership resorted to jingoism and continued hurling threats. It is a matter
of record that Pakistan has been talking peace while Indian leaders continue to
stir tension one way or another. Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif has many a time expressed his wish to have cordial
relations with India and is eager to settle all the disputes with India
including Kashmir through dialogue of course, pre-election Indo-Pak tension had
been stirred by BJP and other Hindu
extremist organizations and the campaign was led by Narendra Modi himself. After having being elected as Prime Minster
of India he wished to appease those who
had voted for him. Anyhow, anti Pakistan
statements with provocative themes and jargons
by Indian civil and military leadership are unwarranted especially when
Prim Minister Nawaz Sharif has gone extra mile to have good relations with
India.
India wanted to show to the world that
the government of Pakistan and Pakistani Army were not on the same page and
that Pakistan Army had killed 5 Indian soldiers to dissuade Prime Minister
Nawaz Sharif from pursuing peaceful agenda with India. By unleashing propaganda against Pakistan
military. India wants to prove that
Pakistan military is against peace initiative with India. It goes with out saying that India’s
Jingoistic media follows the Indian government in fanning outage. On the other hand a section of Pakistan media was often supportive of Indian narrative and
Indian’s stance and insinuates that Pakistan military is responsible for ceasefire violations because
it wants to sabotage peace imitative
from Nawaz Sharif. Some analysts see
violations by India to win upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir. They do not understand that BJP or Congress
or their affiliates would have clear majority in Jammu and Laddakh, which is
a small
part of the Kashmir.
In the valley, Hurriyat conference is
likely to boycott the elections as usual, but even National Congress and other
pro-India in the valley would not allow Modi government to withdraw Article 370
to deprive India of special status.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Umar Abdullah has already rejected the
plan. In a tweet , while responding to
BJP leader’s statement about reviewing the above article stated: “Mark my words
and save this tweet long after Modi government is a distant memory, either J&K won’t be part
of Indian or Art 370 will still exist.
“In fact this Article was the result of an agreement between Sheikh
Abdullah and Jawaharlal Nehru and National Conference would considered it as
violation of the agreement. However, it would be too simplistic to
consider aggressive posture as mere LoC ceasefire violations. Even section of Indian media stated during
elections that the Hindutva candidate.
Narendra Modi was confident of his victory, adding “Modi is a religious
fanatic and he wants to create a Hindu Rashtra based nation”.
