Independence Day as Black Day
SRINAGAR: Kashmiris on both
sides of the Line of Control and the world over observed the India's
Independence Day as Black Day on Thursday to convey the message to the
international community that India has usurped the Kashmiris' inalienable right
to self-determination.The day was marked by complete shutdown in occupied
Kashmir, call for which has been given by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference
Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the veteran Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani,
the JKLF Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik, and other pro-liberation leaders.
The occupation authorities
have put in place stringent restrictions in Srinagar and other towns to prevent
people from holding anti-India demonstrations. Amid complete shutdown, a large
number of Indian troops and police personnel are patrolling the deserted roads
and streets. The administration has taken tight security measures around Bakhshi
Stadium, the main venue of the 15th August celebrations. CCTV cameras are being
used for surveillance purposes while sharp shooters have been deployed in
strength in all sensitive areas and vital installations in Srinagar. On the
other hand, mobile telephone service across the Kashmir Valley has been
suspended to prevent people from sharing information about the latest situation
of the occupied territory. The picturesque Himalayan territory is divided
between India and Pakistan by the UN-monitored LoC, but both countries claim it
in full.
Freedom fighters' have also
been fighting Indian forces since 1989 for the independence of the disputed
territory. Although violence has abated during the last decade, the fighting
has left tens of thousands of people, mostly civilians, dead.
