Asserting that there is no threat to Amarnath Yatra, Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali
Shah Geelani Wednesday alleged that Army’s Operative Shiva for the protection of the pilgrimage was New Delhi’s political move to malign Kashmiris’ struggle.
“The proposed Operation Shiva is a well planed and calculated move aimed at maligning and discrediting the ongoing freedom struggle because there is no threat to the yatris either from people or from militants. It is highly deplorable that India is trying to mislead its people as well as international community,” Geelani said in a statement.
Geelani clarified that people of Kashmir have never opposed or objected to the Yatra. “However, the Government of India is trying to use a religious ritual as a tool to implement their political and military objectives,” he said.
Geelani alleged that Amarnath Shrine Board was running a parallel government in Jammu and Kashmir. “Operation Shiva has multi-dimensional implications. Its main objective is to handover Yatra route to armed forces in order to project the freedom movement as a sectarian strife against a particular sect and create worries and apprehensions among the yatris and their families,” he said.
Geelani said the people of Jammu and Kashmir are not communal and have nothing to do with sectarian politics. “Kashmiris are famous for their humble nature and hospitality. The Amarnath Yatra is being conducted for the last 150 years and during all these years the people of Jammu and Kashmir have treated yatris with unique hospitality,” he said.
Recalling the “blockade of supplies to Kashmir by some sections of people belonging to Jammu in 2008 during the people’s uprising when forces were showering bullets and killing innocent Kashmiris,” he said the locals those days also provided shelter to yatris in their houses and served them food.
Referring to incidents like Chatti Singhpora and Alfaran episodes, Geelani said, “The armed forces under the garb of these fake episodes in the past tried to give bad name to the freedom struggle but the truth prevailed and they failed in their nefarious designs.”

Reiterating his demand to hand over the affairs of Amaranth Yatra to local Pandits, Geelani said the yatra should be run on Gangotri pattern and the number of visiting pilgrims be limited to save the fragile atmosphere.
